We start early because decay starts early: in the last national oral health survey in India (2002 to 2003), around half of five-year-olds already had tooth decay. The first visit is recommended by the child's first birthday (International Association of Paediatric Dentistry), and that is when we like to see them, before anything hurts.

How a first visit and a filling go at our Vadavalli clinic

Milk teeth matter. They hold the space for the adult teeth, and an infected milk tooth can damage the adult tooth forming under it. We fix cavities in milk teeth rather than wait for them to fall out.

A frightened child is not treated by force. If a child cannot cope on the day, we stop, do something small and positive, and try again another day. It takes one more visit and saves years of fear.

A first look at the bite at age seven. Crowding, thumb-sucking effects and jaw growth are easiest to guide early. We tell you if braces are likely later, and when. Individual results vary with the child, the tooth and home brushing.

Children's dentistry in Coimbatore: quick answers

By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth. The visit is a look and a count, and it makes every later visit easier.

Because it may not fall out for years, and an infected one hurts, spreads and can damage the adult tooth under it. A small child tooth filling now is easier than an extraction later.

Most are not, once they have seen the instruments on their hand and their teeth on the screen. If a child cannot cope on the day, we stop and try again; we do not hold children down.

Local numbing for fillings and extractions, explained as a sleepy tooth. Very small cavities are sometimes done without it.

Brush twice a day from the first tooth with a smear of fluoride toothpaste, a pea-sized amount from age three, and no bottle in bed. We show parents the technique at the first visit.

Around age seven, when the first adult molars and front teeth are in. Most do not need anything yet, but the ones who do benefit from an early plan.
