What to do in the next ten minutes
Severe toothache
- 1Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to clear anything trapped.
- 2Take the pain relief you normally use, as its packet directs. Do not put a tablet against the gum.
- 3Cold compress on the cheek if there is swelling. No heat.
- 4Call us. Severe toothache treatment on the same day is usually a filling, a root canal started, or an extraction, and we tell you which after the X-ray.
Knocked-out adult tooth
- 1Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Do not scrub it.
- 2If it is clean, put it back in the socket and bite gently on a cloth. If not, keep it in milk or in your cheek.
- 3Come straight in. The strongest chance of saving the tooth is within the first 30 to 60 minutes (International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines, 2020).
- 4A knocked-out milk tooth is not put back; call us and we check the gum and the adult tooth below.
Broken or chipped tooth
- 1Rinse, and keep any large piece in milk.
- 2Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
- 3Avoid chewing on that side and anything hot or cold.
- 4Call us. A broken tooth emergency is usually a same-day bonding, a temporary cover, or a plan for a crown.
Swelling, abscess or a gum boil
- 1Cold compress outside the cheek, 15 minutes on, 15 off.
- 2Do not press or pop it.
- 3Call us the same day; swelling does not settle on its own.
- 4If the swelling is spreading to the eye or neck, or you cannot swallow, go to a hospital emergency department first.
Bleeding after an extraction
- 1Fold clean gauze or a cloth, bite firmly on the socket for 30 minutes without checking.
- 2Sit upright, no rinsing, no spitting, no straws, no smoking.
- 3If it has not slowed after 30 minutes of firm pressure, call us; if it is heavy and continuous, go to a hospital.
Lost crown, lost filling or a broken braces wire
- 1Keep the crown. Do not glue it yourself.
- 2Cover a sharp wire end with wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum.
- 3Call us. A crown that still fits is usually re-cemented the same day; a filling is replaced in one visit; a wire is clipped in minutes.
