Not every stain whitens. Surface stain comes off with a cleaning, enamel that has yellowed responds to whitening, and grey or banded stain inside the tooth usually needs a veneer to mask it. Telling you which yours is, before you pay for anything, is the whole point of the shade check.

We recommend the least treatment that changes the stain: a cleaning before whitening, whitening before veneers. Prices are indicative and confirmed after clinical examination.

Until you are seen

  1. 1Do not start whitening strips or a whitening toothpaste on a single dark tooth or a patchy stain; they will not lift it and can make the difference more obvious.
  2. 2Brush twice a day and floss; surface stain builds on plaque.
  3. 3Rinse with water after tea, coffee or turmeric-heavy food.
  4. 4If you plan veneers or a crown on a front tooth, do not whiten first without asking; the shade has to be matched in the right order.

Stained teeth: quick answers

Enamel thins with age and the yellower layer underneath shows through, and tea, coffee and tobacco stain the surface. Brushing removes plaque, not either of those.

It removes surface stain and brings back your natural shade. It does not lighten the enamel itself; that is whitening.

Most often the nerve inside it has died, sometimes years after a knock. That tooth needs checking, and the fix is internal bleaching or a veneer, not surface whitening.

Partly, sometimes. Stains inside the enamel from childhood respond less to whitening, and veneers are usually what masks them.
