How the treatment runs

    Numb and open

    Local anaesthetic, and we wait until the tooth is fully numb. Then a small opening to reach the nerve.

  2. 2
    Clean and measure

    A rotary endomotor shapes each canal. An electronic apex locator measures it to the root tip, confirmed on RVG, so nothing is left behind or pushed beyond the root.

  3. 3
    Seal

    Canals are disinfected and sealed with gutta-percha so bacteria cannot get back in.

  4. 4
    Rebuild and cap

    A filling closes the tooth, a post and core if it needs one, and the crown goes on within one to two weeks.

The crown is part of the treatment: a root-treated back tooth without a crown cracks and is lost at around six times the rate of a crowned one (Aquilino and Caplan, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2002).

Most root-treated teeth last for years: pooled studies put survival at 86 to 93 percent over two to ten years (Ng and colleagues, International Endodontic Journal, 2010). The failures are usually a missed canal, a leaking filling, a crack or no crown.

Some teeth should not be root treated: cracked through the root, too broken down to hold a crown, or surrounded by severe bone loss. There we advise removal and, if you want it, an implant or bridge. Individual results vary with the tooth and how soon the crown is placed.
