Missing tooth replacement options

A tooth lost to decay, an extraction years ago, a gap you have learned to chew around: at Apollo Dental Vadavalli we look at the gap, the teeth beside it and the bone under it on an OPG or CBCT, and tell you in one visit which of three ways of replacing it fits your mouth and your budget, an implant, a bridge or a denture, with the price of each.

This page explains what a gap does over time, what each replacement gives you, and where each situation usually leads. The examination decides which one is yours.

What a missing tooth can lead to if the gap is left

What you noticeWhat it can indicateWhat we usually do
A single gap at the back, chewing on the other sideThe neighbouring teeth beginning to tilt into the gap, the opposite tooth drifting downReplace the tooth before the neighbours move: an implant or a bridge
A front tooth gap you hide when you smileA cosmetic and speech problem now, bone shrinkage under the gap over timeAn implant with a crown, or a bridge, matched to the neighbours
Several missing teeth on one side, food packingLoss of chewing on that side, extra load on the remaining teethImplants, a bridge, or a partial denture
Most or all teeth missing, or a loose old dentureBone that has shrunk under the denture, a bite that has collapsedFull mouth implants, an implant-supported denture, or a new complete denture
A tooth about to be lostA chance to plan the replacement before the extractionSocket preservation at the extraction, then the replacement

The gap changes the bone. A 12-month study of single extractions measured about half the ridge width lost in the first year (Schropp and colleagues, International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, 2003). That is why we ask to see a gap early: an implant placed while the bone is there is simpler and cheaper than one placed after a graft.

Missing teeth treatment in Coimbatore: the three options side by side

OptionWhat it isSuitsPrice at our clinic
Dental implantA titanium root in the bone with a crown on top; stands on its ownOne or more gaps with sound teeth beside them, and enough boneFrom ₹35,000 plus the crown
BridgeCaps on the teeth either side with the replacement tooth joined betweenA gap where the neighbours already need crowns, or surgery is not for youPer unit, in the material chosen
Partial or complete dentureRemovable teeth on a base that sits on the gums and remaining teethSeveral or all teeth missing, or a lower budgetConfirmed at the consultation
Implant-supported dentureA denture that clicks onto two to four implantsA loose lower dentureCase by case

We recommend the implant when the neighbouring teeth are sound, because it leaves them alone, and the bridge when they already need crowns. A denture is the right answer for some, and we say so. Prices are indicative and confirmed after clinical examination.

Until you are seen

  1. 1Keep the gap and the teeth beside it clean; food packs there and the neighbours are at risk.
  2. 2Chew on both sides where you can, so one side is not overloaded.
  3. 3If a tooth is loose or about to be lost, book before it goes; planning the replacement at the extraction keeps the bone.
  4. 4Bring any old denture or earlier X-rays to the visit.

How we assess a gap at our Vadavalli clinic

  1. 1

Look at the gap and its neighbours.

Have the teeth tilted, has the opposite tooth drifted, are the neighbours sound or already filled and crowned.

  2. 2

    OPG or CBCT.

The bone height and width under the gap, on a flat X-ray or our in-house 3D scan where an implant is likely.

  3. 3

    Bite and gums.

A replacement only lasts on healthy gums and a bite that will not overload it.

  4. 4

    Three options with prices.

Implant, bridge or denture, with what each costs and how long each takes, before you choose.

Where a gap in the teeth usually leads

Missing teeth: quick answers

Usually yes. The neighbours tilt, the opposite tooth drifts down, and the bone shrinks. A wisdom tooth is the exception.

An implant when the teeth beside the gap are sound, because it leaves them untouched. A bridge when they already need crowns or surgery is not for you. We show you both with prices.

The bone starts shrinking within months and the neighbours start moving within a year or two. The earlier it is assessed, the simpler the replacement.

Yes. If the bone has shrunk, an implant may need a graft first, or a bridge or denture may be the better route. The CBCT tells us.

Sometimes, with an immediate implant or an immediate denture, when it is planned before the extraction. That is why we ask to see a failing tooth before it goes.

₹300 to ₹500 for the consultation, ₹500 to ₹800 for an OPG and ₹1,000 to ₹4,000 for a CBCT where an implant is likely. Treatment prices are on each treatment page.

The information on this page is general and does not replace an in-person dental examination. Only an examination can tell you what is causing your symptom.
